What Are Behavioral Interview Questions and Why Do Employers Ask Them

Behavioral questions focus on your past experiences. The principle is simple. How you acted before is likely how you will act again. That is why recruiters often start with phrases like

  • “Tell me about a time when”

  • “Give me an example of”

They want real stories that demonstrate collaboration, problem solving, and performance under pressure rather than theoretical answers.

The STAR Method

Whether answering behavioral or scenario based questions, the STAR method provides a clear structure. STAR stands for Situation, Task, Action, and Result and helps you tell your story in an organized way.

Situation (20 percent)
Set the context. Explain where you were, your role, and the circumstances. This helps the interviewer understand the background.

Task (10 percent)
Describe the specific challenge or responsibility. Explain why it mattered and what was at stake.

Action (60 percent)
Detail the steps you took. Focus on your role and highlight skills, initiative, and decision making.

Result (10 percent)
Share the outcome or expected result. Show measurable impact, lessons learned, or positive changes.

Behavioral Question

Q: Tell me about a time you had to convince a team to adopt your idea
A: “During a marketing project, the team disagreed on ad strategy. I analyzed performance metrics, compared return on investment, and presented my proposal. The team agreed and we increased leads by 25 percent in two months.”

Scenario Based Question

Q: What would you do if a key system failed before a client meeting
A: “I would assess the issue immediately and inform both the team and client. I would switch to backup resources to continue the presentation and later propose improvements to prevent it from happening again.”
